IRONMAN South Africa moves to Mossel Bay for 2027 African Championship
IRONMAN is moving its South African full-distance African Championship to Mossel Bay on April 18, 2027 — the first new IRONMAN host city in the country in 21 years.

Why Mossel Bay
Industry and local reports say Mossel Bay becomes only the third IRONMAN host destination in South Africa and the first new full-distance venue in 21 years. Nelson Mandela Bay keeps a major stake via the returning 70.3 African Championship in January.

Qualification paths
The Mossel Bay full-distance race will qualify athletes toward the 2027 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona. Both 70.3s feed the 2027 Precision Fuel & Hydration IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga. General registration for Mossel Bay and Nelson Mandela Bay opened Aug. 12, 2026; Durban opened Sept. 2.

What athletes should book now
Race week housing around Santos Beach will tighten early. The Nov. 22, 2026 70.3 remains the last half-distance edition in Mossel Bay before the town flips to full-distance championship status — a useful recon for athletes eyeing April.
Calendar math for working athletes
January’s Nelson Mandela Bay 70.3, April’s Mossel Bay full distance, and June’s Durban 70.3 restore a January–April–June rhythm South African age-groupers know how to train around. Athletes chasing Kona slots should treat April 18 as a championship peak; those building toward Chattanooga 70.3 Worlds can split emphasis between January and June without forcing a midwinter full-distance block.
