Eskom marks 476 days without load shedding after clear winter

Eskom says South Africa has now gone 476 consecutive days without load shedding after meeting demand through the entire 2026 winter — including overcast stretches that cut rooftop solar — fulfilling the utility’s pre-season no-shedding outlook.
Winter without the blackouts

“The stability experienced during winter was driven by a significant turnaround in Eskom’s generation performance,” the utility said in remarks carried by SAnews on Monday. Meeting peak winter demand without emergency shedding is the clearest operational milestone since the crisis years that defined South African business planning.
Load reduction is the next fight

National load shedding and localised load reduction are different tools. Eskom’s eradication programme reports 1,222,430 customers restored to normal supply (~72% of the 1.69 million targeted), including large cohorts in Limpopo/Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Remaining constraints still cluster where illegal connections and feeder overloads persist, with a national eradication target of March 2027.
For households and factories, the winter result does not erase tariff pressure or municipal failures — but it does remove the daily outage lottery that once dominated SA expat group chats.
