OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra hits Critical cyber tier as agent rollout begins
OpenAI has begun deploying GPT-6 Astra, its new frontier model built for computer-use agents — and the first OpenAI system the company says reaches the Critical cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework.

What Astra is for
OpenAI positions Astra as an agent that can drive computers and browsers, finish professional artefacts, and handle long-running software work — not merely chat. The API model id is gpt-6-astra, with a long context window and configurable reasoning effort.
That product framing matters for markets: every autonomous click, file open, and browser step is another inference bill. Safety overhead compounds the spend. OpenAI’s own safety overview says misalignment monitoring now rides on tool-using inference for external Astra deployments, at significant compute cost.

Access and pricing shape
Reporting around the launch described staged availability: cybersecurity Daybreak participants first, then ChatGPT Pro/Business/Enterprise and API customers, with Plus access following. Separate coverage noted Astra message allowances on ChatGPT running at roughly half the rate of GPT-5.6 Sol on comparable plans — a rationing choice consistent with cost and safety constraints.
Enterprise admins should expect the model off by default until enabled, matching OpenAI’s recent gating pattern for frontier systems.
Astra is state-of-the-art on computer use, browser use, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work.

The business read
Astra is further evidence that the AI spend cycle is rotating from one-off training clusters toward continuous agent inference — plus the monitors that watch those agents. Chipmakers, cloud hosts, and enterprise software vendors all sit downstream of that shift.
It also raises a governance question companies cannot outsource: if a vendor’s flagship agent can discover novel exploits, how do you sandbox it, log it, and keep it away from production credentials? OpenAI’s Critical label is a marketing milestone and a procurement warning at the same time.
